JOHN CUSACK IN A HAWAIIAN SHIRT. O.K. I'M DOWN.

Paranormal investigator Mike Enslin (John Cusack) has been searching for proof of the supernatural ever since his daughter died years ago. He schleps from one "haunted" bed and breakfast to another seeking material for his string of ghost books. After recieving an invitation to stay in infamous room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel in New York, Enslin finds more than he bargains for as he questions not only his environment but his sanity.
Mmmmm... ghosthunters. Excellent.

This film isn't scary but is definitely entertaining. There are the usual cheap scares filtered throughout but one scene in particular is actually creep worthy.
All I'm going to say people is the vent scene is pretty cool.

Cusack did a nice job of keeping me attentive and his sarcasm alone reminded me of how I get when I encounter the typical "Oh, you do that ghost stuff like on the t.v. there?" Samuel L. Jackson took his bit part as hotel manager and played of Cusack nicely. I'll admit, I watched him intently in 1408 for one reason. Or I should say I was waiting for a certain line. Since Snakes On A Plane has launched Jackson into campy B-movie cult status, the filmmakers couldn't resist a little jab in that direction. He does deliver.

The story (originally a short tale by Stephen King ) is interesting, the boys are worth watching and most importantly, it had numerous nods towards ghosthunters. From sitting for hours on end trying to score some EVP to the hordes of thrill seekers asking the all original question of where's the scariest place you've been, ghosthunters will get a few chuckles from 1408.

Hark, Do I Hear A Rant Approaching? I'll keep it tame.

One thing I noticed was that the audience I was in largely consisted of teens and twenty-somethings, which is great considering they voice how they feel about a film before leaving the theater. A lot of people didn't care for 1408 and as I was listening to the response I figured out why.

TADA!
The newfound interest in ghosthunting that Hollywood and television have given us has fueled the minds of the jackass generation of ghosthunters into buying that it's all an action packed adventure. They believe that your night will be filled with demons chasing you through abandoned buildings and Zelda Rubinstein popping out of corners sending evil through the white light.

It's just not like that. Hard to believe I know!
Ghosthunters actually spend more time sitting and waiting. Waiting being the key word. So, I enjoyed 1408 because the beginning echoed what paranormal investigators have been going through forever. Now we have legions of dumbasses defacing property and shutting down opportunites for real investigations to occur. Thank you t.v. for editing us into the Indiana Jones category. Appreciate it!

A thanks to director Mikael Hafstrom (Derailed) for giving us a nice film to gnaw on.

You don't need to run out and see this a.s.a.p., but you definitely want to check this one out spooksters!

Trust me, if there was a place like 1408, my ass would be there in a heartbeat.
