To BOO or not to BOO?
The premise is simple. Your typical group of pretty, tarty college kids decide it would be a fantastic idea to mess around the cursed abandoned hospital in their hometown on Halloween night.
Naturally sex and death must ensue!
I'm actually not surprised by what I've seen. It's the newest trend in independent filmmaking. Anyone that can raise some cash and buy a camera is suddenly in the movie business. Then we are swarmed with horrible plots, cheesy fx and every wannabe actor one usually finds looking for roles on their knees. Excellent.
The setting is the best part of this film because I know when I was a adrenaline chasing teen, I longed to find such ripe atmospheres like an abandoned hospital. The building is creepy and exactly where you would hope a horror tale would gruesomely unfold. The only other highlight that I could salvage was the cameo by Dee Wallace Stone . She is such a great actress and has appeared in some of the best films in the genre. It's actually a treat to see Dee lurking around the lonesome corridors.
Unfortunately, it reminds you of another trend in film these days. Most of the money these filmmakers raise ends up "purchasing" a legendary horror icon for their movie. What usually happens? They appear here and there throughout the hap-hazard production looking thoroughly bored and ready to move on to the next set.
Heartwrenching, isn't it?
The ghosts aren't scary, the characters play off like a Lifetime flick and, of course, the lead character just so happens to be a sensitive. It isn't even entertaining enough to be good in that extremely bad movie way.
Why does it have to be such a vicious cycle?
The ghosthunting world finally gets a resurgence in mainstream America due to new media exposure and it becomes a double-edged sword. The new attention is good for business and helps amateur ghosthunters find their way to the paranormal community to learn and be embraced by others with the same beliefs. And yet, the attention brings out jackasses who vandalize locations and ruin chances for a lot of great investigations to occur.
It also brings out the waves of ghost flicks that are aberrations to the world of film and allowed to defecate on rental shelves everywhere.
RUN PEOPLE, RUN!
Do yourself a favor, put it back on the shelf and walk away quickly.
