Beware the stare of Mary Shaw,
She had no children, only dolls.
And if you see her, do not scream,
Or she'll rip your tongue out at the seam.
Jaime Ashen is horrified to find his wife brutally slain and the police suspecting him of the crime. His only clue in the mystery is a ventriloquist dummy that leads him to his hometown and his estranged father. However, the quiet town of Raven's Fair is host to more than apple pie and sweet summer memories.
There is an old ghost tale attached to the town about the famed ventriloquist Mary Shaw. She was accused of murder, hunted down and had her tongue cut out by enraged townsfolk. Upon her bizarre request she was buried with her entire doll collection.
Following her death, a series of unexplained homicides racked sleepy Raven's Fair. Entire families were found brutally murdered with their tongues cut out and seated morbidly posed in family portraits.
And so, Jaime Ashen must unravel the legend of Mary Shaw to find his wife's killer before he becomes the next target.
The ghost story that the filmmakers' came up with in regards to Mary Shaw is quite intriguing and creepy. It's too bad that it isn't a real tale or I'd be on the first plane to Raven's Fair. It's great to see the film using the foundation of traditional ghost stories passed through small towns for the plot. And so, the tradition of the Greek Bards continues.
Cinematographer John Leonetti did a fantastic job at showcasing the dying main street usa. Raven's Fair is creepy and foreboding - exactly where you expect a deranged ghost tale to thrive. I have to give a shout out to set design and art direction because these locations were highly effective.
And folks, that's where the good times end.
This flick is NOT SCARY in the slightest. So much could have been done with the dolls and was overlooked. There were a few scary visuals but mostly it's all build up and no release. You anticipate the scary parts (Oh no! Get ready. Hold your breath.) only to find nothing on the other end.
Everything was sub-par. The acting was mediocre, with Donny Whalberg only adding a stale laugh or two. Mostly, it was just BORING. It's kind of surprising considering James Wan and Leigh Whannell of SAW fame, helmed this film.
If the filmmakers would have actually watched this film they would have realized that it's fluff and doesn't even have the usual cheap thrills that would garner it worthy amongst the easily amused.
I honestly wished for the two hours I watched it that Mary Shaw would take my eyes during the dead silences.
Cool idea. Bad execution. Poor Mary.

Haven't seen it, and your review makes me not want to part with $8...wanted Mary to take your eyes out? Sounds almost as bad as when I sat through "Windtalkers" |
