No, Not THAT Kind Of Shocker! The Movie, I Swear!!!
Psychotic serial killer, Horace Pinker, meets his maker in the state pen's electric chair. Or so you think.
Right before death, Horace performs a ritual allowing his soul to continue his bloody rampage through the form of electric currents. The only one who knows this is Jonathan Parker, a man whose family and fiance fell prey to Pinker. And so it rests on Jonathan's shoulders to stop Pinker and bring peace to all the restless souls of his victims.
This movie gets SLAMMED by critics all the time. It's not brilliantly shot, doesn't have ingenius plot twists and at times has the pacing of a made-for-t.v. movie.
BUT ... it's a fun ride!
It's a whole lot of hokey fun. Yes, if you want to get technical, it does feel a little like a rehash of Freddy, but who cares?
It was written and directed by Wes Craven , the father of Mr. Freddy, and one thing Craven is notorious for is trying to pierce your psyche. He is pretty much the Dr. Phil of the horror community. Just when you think you've had enough of the blatant pyschological tones, he pops in a soaking wet girl or an insane bloodbath to help you remember that you're still watching a horror flick. Still, I do love Wes' work.
There is a reason that mediocre films like this get a cult following. Horror fans know what's good but they also keep a special place in their heart for the SHLOCKY stuff. There's nothing better than a campy horror flick to make you smile fondly. And that's what Shocker is.
I can remember being a kid and watching the edited for content horror films running across TNT and TBS. The First Power, Tremors and Shocker (along with many others) have become staples of the t.v. horror flicks that you divulge in on a lazy afternoon. These campy classics are just fun to watch and as a kid you feel a little rebellious for watching all these shlock-o-rama's that most people cringe at.
These cult horror films bring on the good time memories.
Shocker is full of humor with things like a little girl in bright pink pants (usual 80's fare) dragging her leg like Horace Pinker, manning a bulldozer to kill Jonathan Parker and cursing out the world while she does it.
Excellent.
The cast was a neat ensemble with Peter Berg , from Smokin' Aces and Chicago Hope, in the lead role and Mitch Pileggi , from The X-Files, as our crazed killer Horace Pinker. There are a few interesting cameos such as John Tesh as a t.v. newscaster and Heather Lagenkamp as one of the victims. Of course, the best cameo is Ted Raimi in all his goofy glory. You just love Ted no matter what he does.
This is nothing more than a fun romp with lots of chuckles to be had. Don't read too much into it (Krissi P.!), pop it on one afternoon, lay back and bask in some campiness.
Good Times, Good Times.
