Suspiria is widely considered Italian filmmaker Dario Argento's masterpiece. There's good reason to believe so.
American ballet dancer Suzy Bannion heads to West Germany to study at the prestigious Tanz Academy of Dance. She encounters chilling murders, a peculiar staff and a mysterious directress that never shows her face.
Argento is a brilliant filmmaker when it comes to visual terror. His work is so stylized that he manages to transform the most grotesque into art. You can sit for hours dissecting his films on a shot by shot basis. Many of us have!
With Suspiria, the kaleidoscope-style backgrounds and freakish blue and bloody red lighting only add to the escalating paranoia creeping around Suzy.
Just as the title implies, you are thrown into a translucent world of magic an myth with only one fact as your friend. To trust your crippling suspicions.
Some people say that this film is "a fairytale for adults". This really is an adult fairytale because the atmosphere is almost too crisp and overdone as if you fell into the rabbit hole yourself. Yet, it retains a sense of despair, a terrifying suffocation that resembles the sensations and paranoia of our own disturbing realities.
This film takes what we know about witchcraft and paints it a few shades darker. It makes for an effective hook.
This is another classic horror film. There's so much style and brilliance in this piece.
For all you DELICIOUS people who love carnage, do not worry. This IS Dario Argento after all.
He's one of masters of the giallo film movement, and, in my opinion, the best kill scene is at the beginning of the film. It all makes you smile and appreciate gore on a higher level.
Ahhh... Gore.
